Weight Sensing System

TRW continues to lead the way in the design, engineering and development of advanced adaptive restraint systems, such as Weight Sensing systems, for occupant classification and detection.

TRW has currently launched several systems based on four strain gauge sensors at the corners of the seat rails.  These work similarly in concept to a bathroom scale, as they weigh the occupant and classify the occupant by weight.  Once the system has classified the occupant, it can determine if the airbag deployment needs to be tailored in the case of large children or small adults, or whether the passenger airbag can be deactivated
