Self Adapting Vent

As the airbag inflates, the occupant position and distance sensors help determine the force of deployment.  Then, a pyrotechnic actuator initiates a vent mechanism within the mounting plate of the airbag module to adjust the performance. In some circumstances, the position of the occupant to the airbag suggests that more gas be allowed to escape from the module, allowing the energy to dissipate more quickly. This technology provides a solution for helping to meet OOP (out-of-position) requirements of FMVSS 208 while using a single-stage inflator.

Figure 1   Figure 1
The occupant is out of position when an accident occurs. TRW’s adaptive venting system compensates by opening the vents. This allows some air to escape lowering the airbag’s pressure

When the occupant is in a proper position, the vents are closed and the airbag deploys at full strength
