Lane Departure Warning/Guidance
TRW's Lane Departure Warning and Lane Guidance systems use a forward-facing video camera mounted behind the rearview mirror to detect the lane markings on a highway and alongside many types of roadways.
If the driver unintentionally crosses a road lane marking or the edge of the road he receives a visual, audible or haptic warning to allow him to correct the situation. Haptic feedback options include a vibrating steering wheel that is activated when crossing lane markings. LDW is comparable to a virtual road rumble.
The TRW Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) functionality takes the information from the video sensor and integrates it with TRW's Electric Steering system. If the driver unintentionally crosses a road lane marking or the edge of the road the system provides a counter-steering torque to help guide the driver back to the center of the lane. The feedback torque is generated by the electric power steering system. The limited corrective steering torque alerts the driver to adjust the car trajectory before a dangerous driving situation may arise. Control target of LKA is to prevent a lane departure by steering intervention.
The TRW Lane Guidance (LG) applies a continuous torque to the steering wheel in order to support the driver keeping the vehicle in the center of the lane. The induced torque is generated by the Electric Steering system. Control target of LG is to keep the vehicle at the middle of the lane. LG and LKA can be overruled by the driver at any time.
