The compact knee airbag module uses TRW’s SHI2 inflator technology, as well as an airbag that covers the potential knee impact area at the lower part of the instrument panel. This setup helps to provide harmonized occupant kinematics and positioning while reducing and/or balancing chest and lower limb loads. The module features a 2D pillow airbag with internal tethers designed to yield an effective deployment and help reduce tibia loads during a crash. The housing can be configured to suit most vehicle space constraints. The SHI2 can use a visible class-A-surface cover, or a knee airbag module with protective cover, allowing the module to fit into the instrument panel with an integrated airbag door.
