ABS uses four independent sensors which individually monitor each wheel's speed. When wheel lock or skidding is sensed, a signal is sent to the ABS Electro-hydraulic Control Unit (EHCU) which controls the system and can determine when a panic situation exists. If the equipped vehicle goes into a panic situation, TRW's ABS system initiates, activating the hydraulic units which apply and release brake pressure very rapidly to prevent wheel lock. In the case of four-wheel ABS, all four wheels continue to rotate allowing a driver to steer away from objects during rapid deceleration.
