Semi Active Roll Control

Based on the ADC concept, TRW's Semi-Active Roll Control (SARC) system offers similar, albeit slightly reduced, anti-roll compensation at a lower cost. This system is comprised of an actuator fitted to the front and/or rear stabilizer bars and does not require a hydraulic pump or hydraulic lines.  The actuators lock or unlock the stabilizer bars using an electrical signal sent by either an ESC or stand alone sensor.  In principle, the system allows the stabilizer bars to be decoupled from the suspension when travelling straight and engaged when cornering.

Since the stabilizer bars are decoupled from the suspension during straight-line driving, their stiffness can be significantly increased without compromising vehicle ride comfort. When engaged, this system reduces roll angle dramatically and helps reduce roll propensity for high center-of-gravity vehicles (SUVs, Trucks) thereby improving handling significantly.

TRW’s SARC system offers the following features:

  • Ride comfort in straight ahead driving conditions – reduced head toss
  • Improved off-road performance
  • Reduced chassis/body roll angle
  • Rollover mitigation
  • Simple and low cost design
