TRW’s fixed driver airbag module revolutionizes the typical driver side airbag and steering wheel configuration. Conventional driver airbags are round and rotate with the steering wheel when it is turned. By separating the airbag module from the wheel’s rim the airbag does not rotate with the wheel. This allows the use of an asymmetrical airbag shape that offers opportunities for changing the deployment of driver-side airbags. The stationary center area in the steering wheel also offers creative space for the integration of multifunction control switches or displays.
