Single Stage Technology

TRW is among the world leaders in the design and development of inflator technologies for the full range of airbag systems including driver, passenger, knee, side impact and curtain modules.

The single stage inflator has evolved significantly since airbag systems were introduced more than 30 years ago. Performance enhancements, new types of gas generation systems and the wide variety of ways these inflators must be packaged within  vehicles are all challenges that TRW continues to meet with its full complement of inflator designs.

Contactless Horn System

TRW's contactless horn system incorporates a more preferable feel when activating the vehicle's horn. TRW's contactless horn system consists of a simple magnet and sensor setup allowing the driver improved simplicity and reliability.  Simple wiring guidance, no contact elements (switches).

Illumination Technology

TRW's steering wheel illumination technology provides drivers with aesthetically pleasing buttons and switches for vehicle interiors. By utilizing advanced LED and reflector technology, TRW can provide the highest quality and functionality to any vehicle interior.  LED’s have an indefinite lifespan.  LED’s provide clear illumination.

Vibrating Steering Wheel

TRW's vibrating steering wheel system allows drivers to be notified of possible collisions, lane departures or drowsiness warnings. This simple motor, mounted inside the wheel, can be customized to notify the driver of any imminent incidents or events.

Steering Wheel with Integrated Microphone

TRW's prototype microphone and steering wheel system allows drivers to utilize mobile phones in their vehicles hands free, resulting in reduced driver distraction. The integrated microphone mounted in the wheel's center hub provides excellent acoustical quality and clarity.

Advanced Steering Wheel

TRW’s revolutionary experimental steering wheel exemplifies TRW’s commitment to innovation. The latest prototype features a broad spectrum of TRW systems, from TRW’s vibrating motor notifying drivers of impending accidents to TRW’s steering wheel rim heating, TRW’s experimental steering wheel embraces the future of design, practicality and safety.

Advanced Steering Wheels

Fixed Driver Airbag Module

While conventional driver airbags are generally round and rotate with the steering wheel, TRW’s fixed version has an asymmetric shape that allows changes to the deployment of the driver-side airbags.   A circumferential gear wheel keeps the airbag module in a defined position. The system transmits direct forces from the steering wheel spokes to the steering column, eliminating any effects on the strength of the steering wheel.  The stationary center area also allows for the integration of multi-function control switches.

Backover Warning

The sensing structure of this system can be drawn from camera, ultrasonic or radar technologies – or a combination – to ensure the appropriate actuation of the system. The mitigation strategy includes warning the driver of a potential backover hazard and/or automatically engaging the brakes to prevent a backover accident. TRW Backover Warning offers a complete systems solution, including sensing and actuation. It identifies objects behind the vehicle when reversing, and helps protect against backover accidents involving pedestrians and children.

Side Impact Integration Systems

Side Impact Integration Systems combine Electronic Stability Control and Active Dynamic Control as the first line of defense to avoid or mitigate the impact of vehicle accidents. TRW’s Active Control Retractor works together with these active safety systems, while curtain or side and thorax airbags inflate to offer greater protection in a collision.

Automatic Emergency Braking

Component PDF:

Automatic Emergency Braking is the ultimate expression of intelligent or 'Cognitive' safety.  This system combines advanced driver assist systems and electronic stability control to slow down the vehicle and potentially mitigate the severity of an impact when a collision is unavoidable.   Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) works with or without driver intervention if a crash is determined to be inevitable.
