EPB

In addition to providing the parking brake function, EPB is a fully integral part of the brake system that also allows for emergency brake control. When combined with TRW's Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, emergency braking is executed allowing for full four-wheel ABS stop functionality if required.

EPB also eliminates the need for a parking brake lever or pedal and improves vehicle styling, space management and crashworthiness.

The EPB system's communication interface with onboard computer systems means that a number of design features can be added or deleted as specified for the application.

Among the many features offered are:

  • Drive Away Assist
Automatically releases the parking brake as soon as the intention to drive away is detected. The parking brake is released upon acceleration and the modulation of the clutch and/or gas pedal.
  • Automatic Hold
The Auto Hold function holds the vehicle automatically if standstill is detected. The functionality is divided between the Stability Control System (SCS) and the EPB. As soon as the SCS sends a lock command, the EPB will apply mechanical clamp force. If the SCS sends a release command, the EPB system will unlock.
  • Emergency Braking
Applies EPB during dynamic braking and monitors wheel speed to prevent wheel lock (semi-ABS function) to help stabilize the vehicle during emergency brake maneuvers.
  • Rollaway Prevention
Monitors and controls the parking brake clamp force to ensure a safe parking condition, even if the brake is overheated or friction level is low. Both features prevent a vehicle rollaway, even under extreme conditions.
  • Dynamic Braking
Allows for true emergency brake application while the vehicle is being driven. This function interacts with the vehicle´s stability control system to offer four-wheel ABS function. The brake system is modulated via a push button switch operated by the driver.
  • Static Braking
Allows gradient dependent apply and release of park brake via a switch at vehicle standstill.
  • Shift from Park/Shift to Park
Automatic release or apply of park brake due to shifting into a drive or park position (for Automatic Transmission).
